John was born on September 21st, 1830 in Stirling, Scotland and his baptism took place on October 24th, 1830 conducted by Reverend John Sommers.1  John's father was Alexander Mouat and his mother was Janet  Cunningham Sommers.  His paternal grandparents were Archibald Mowat and Jean Grey; his maternal grandparents were Rev John Sommers and Janet McDonald. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Archibald, Alexander, George, Eliza, Euphemia, Ina, Mary, Margaret and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 20 in 1850 in England.
