Mary was born in 1845 in Stirling, Scotland.¹ Mary's father was Alexander Mouat and her mother was Janet Cunningham Sommers. Her paternal grandparents were Archibald Mowat and Jean Grey; her maternal grandparents were Rev John Sommers and Janet McDonald. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, John, Alexander, George, Eliza, Euphemia, Ina, Margaret and Janet. She was the third youngest of the ten children.
