Eliza was born in 1835 in Stirling, Scotland.1   Eliza's father was Alexander Mouat and her mother was Janet  Cunningham Sommers.  Her paternal grandparents were Archibald Mowat and Jean Grey; her maternal grandparents were Rev John Sommers and Janet McDonald. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, John, Alexander, George, Euphemia, Ina, Mary, Margaret and Janet.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 60 in 1895 in Rothesay, Bute.
