John's father was John Sommers and his mother was Janet Cunningham.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Sommers and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Donald Cunningham and <Unknown>. He had a brother and a sister, named Archibald and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 70 on December 10th, 1839.

  John went to University of Glasgow, studied theology and became a Church of Scotland Minister.  He was a clergyman at Chryston in Lanark 1807-1810 and then at Norrieston (an offshoot of Kincardine parish) from 1810 until his death in 1839.
