Robert was born in 1857 in Clackmannan.1   Robert's father was Henry Allan and his mother was Devina Cook.  His paternal grandparents were James Allan and Elizabeth Hynd; his maternal grandparents were Robert Cook and Isabella Fyfe. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Henry, Isabella  and Elspeth.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
