Elspeth was born on June 7th, 1861 in Grangemouth, Parish of Falkirk.1  Elspeth's father was Henry Allan and her mother was Devina Cook.  Her paternal grandparents were James Allan and Elizabeth Hynd; her maternal grandparents were Robert Cook and Isabella Fyfe. She had three brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, Henry and Isabella .  She was the second youngest of the five children.
