Lawrence's father was Alexander Mouat and his mother was Janet Drysdale. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Mouat and Janet Cunningham Sommers; his maternal grandparents were William Drysdale and Janet Archibald. He had a brother and a sister, named Alexander and Jessie Archibald Somers. He was the second oldest of the three children.
